Verse 1:
I see that I'm not what I'm supposed to be - neither as a Christian nor as a man. These lyrics were begun right after a situation where I did not exercise Christian love towards a sister in Christ, and this is a prayer to receive God's guidance in this situation.
Verse 2:
The fruits of the Spirit are not sold at the fruit stand, so I can't buy them anywhere. These are only acquired through opening our spirits to God's. Just by doing that, we are given love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Verse 3:
Singing all of the song leading up to this part has me resting comfortably in God's arms open to receiving his grace via his fruit of the Spirit.
Bridge:
This is a quick prayer to realize that God is working in me, not me in myself.
Chorus:
God is the only one that can fix me. He works in me and I am freed from myself - I am no longer prompted to work on my own accord, but it's God working on his.
Overall:
It's so difficult to improve upon yourself by your own strength. Just like the gardener in the story, if we keep trying to pick all of our weeds, eventually the firstly-plucked will sprout again as we're a few feet down the row. The only way to remove these weeds for good is to let God's Spirit do it for us. We have to surrender our garden to him and him alone. By opening up our spirit to God's, we will receive what God has to offer us - the fruits of the Spirit. That's a heck of a lot easier and tons more powerful than trying to do it on your own!
Galatians 5:22-23
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
The Story of the Gardener
There once was a gardener who went out to his garden one day and noticed that weeds had taken over his garden overnight. He really wanted the best for his garden and he knew what needed to be done to fix it, so he went ahead and began to do all he knew how. He began at the nearest edge picking out the weeds from among the vegetables, but by the time he got a few feet deep into the garden the weeds at the closest edge began to grow back. You see, while he was focusing on fixing the next step, he couldn't keep watch over what he did in the first place.
Only God can really take the weeds out of our garden. By God's Spirit, they are uprooted and our garden is maintained beautifully. The gardener will get nowhere on his own, but with God's Spirit, his garden will grow into exactly what God has designed it to be.
Isaiah 53:11
"After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied."
