Verse 1:
Night was drawing near and the Passover meal was about to be shared among Jesus and His 12 disciples. They enter the upper room where the meal is to be held, and Jesus reminds His disciples what His purpose is on Earth.
Verse 2:
Jesus shares the bread and wine with the disciples and tells them of the significance of such elements - it was God's love that His true blood and body were broken as a sacrifice to atone for all people.
Verse 3:
The disciples were said to have not understood why Jesus had to die - though it was explained to them numerous times. This is why the disciple from whom the perspective is drawn would not have let Jesus go had he known this was his final meal with Him.
Chorus:
Jesus speaking these words throughout the song helps us to take the role of the disciple. Because Jesus had told His disciples about His purpose (to die for the redemption of man) many times, we are told that many times as well throughout the song. Had you have been that disciple, would you have believed Him?
Overall:
This is the story of the Last Supper told in the perspective of a disciple who was there with Jesus the whole time. It's quite an amazing thing to sit down with Jesus and hear Him say what He said and see what He did. Jesus speaks throughout the chorus to the disciples about why He is the one that must die for all man's salvation - just to know that Jesus faced death with such purpose is an inspiration in itself.
Matthew 16:21
"From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life."
Matthew 20:17-19
"Now as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside and said to them, "We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will turn him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!""
Luke 22:7-20
"Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." "Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked. He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' He will show you a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there." They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you."
