Verse 1:
When I get home from a long and tiring day, I does me no good to take it out on those who mean so much to me. There is no reason to bother them with my own petty grouchiness, so here's what I do about that: I put my grouchiness in a 'garden' outside my house so that I can go on without dragging my friends and family down with me! Even when I think the concern is too big to keep in storage, my 'garden' manages to find room for it to stay. This 'garden' is not really the type of garden that we might see on a front lawn per say, but a gift from God to help calm my life, and let me live.
Refrain:
After enjoying my friends' and family's company for a while, I am now ready to head back out into the world on my own. On the way out, I pass by this 'garden', and reach in to pick up where I left off before. I look everywhere, and my grumpiness has completely disappeared from the 'garden's grasp! I guess it wasn't anything worth being upset about in the first place!
Overall:
I am sometimes worried that this song passes the message to run away from your problems, but let me assure you, it does not do such a thing! I know just a well as anybody that when problems build up, they will eventually explode and cause some serious damage. 'My Little Garden' is really about how there are so many really small things that confront our daily lives and get us down. If we give these things to God, He will sort them out and give back what is worth the glum. Chances are, God will quickly discard whatever it was that you 'thought' was a problem, because people tend to make big deals out of nothing.
Proverbs 3:6:
"In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."
